I need your honest input on your understanding of what our goal is for the upcoming CAT meeting (14th)and your thoughts\/opinions\/ideas on what our goal is for the future of this group.
\n
\nI'd like for the CAT teams to have a clear purpose and meaning moving forward and the time we spend togehter to be of the highest quality. If your leaving your classrooms, it should be time well spent. If there are topics that you feel can increase the quality of Science instruction at Sherwood and this CAT is the right forum for engaging in these topics, then let's continue down this path.
\n
\nOn the flip side, I don't want to invent things to discuss to just simply meet. A good teacher can recognize when it's time to change directions. Are we at that place?
\n
\nShould we incorporate Marzano's strategies as a part of our time in CAT's, are their areas that you feel you'd like to deepen your content knowledge? As I plan for the 14th your thoughts will be essential in shaping the direction of this group.
\n
\nYou guys rock!","replyPages":[{"page":0,"digests":[{"id":"8171346","body":"I must admit I feel ambivalent about moving forward. I would like to say I have some great idea that would make our time together more productive but I don't. I feel the needs of the intermediate side are different from the primary side. For example, I need to know how my efforts are affecting the students as they move to the middle school. I would rather have pull out time to fine tune my units. Ultimately, I don't know what a cohesive k-6 science plan would look like.","dateCreated":"1231418821","smartDate":"Jan 8, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"mernst2","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/mernst2","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"8173956","body":"We are starting to approach a time when there really isn't much more we need to discuss. I personally still want to look at the different picture books\/books that we all have that go with different units we teach and get a list complied. That way we can make sure that even with some simple reading aloud with the kids we are bringing up topics that we need to review. My only main area of concern are where we have the big gaps. Overall, I want this time away from our classes is meaningful and when we hit that point we need to make adjustments.","dateCreated":"1231423374","smartDate":"Jan 8, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"karynkerns","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/karynkerns","imageUrl":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/pic\/1222886728\/karynkerns-lg.jpg"}},{"id":"8183014","body":"I agree that we may need to look at the focus of our group. I do feel like the primary teachers and the intermediate teachers have different needs. It would be meaningful if we all had the same vision for what K-6 science looks like at Sherwood, but I think that is difficult to determine.
\n
\nWe had mentioned making a list of activiites that we use. I think this changes form year to year and with teacher to teacher, so it would be difficult to use in a meaningful way. Another idea was to create a list of books. With our new library system it seems much easier to search what is out there, so I am not sure if this would be time well spent.
\n
\nPerhaps spending some time looking at inquiry. However, I feel like I am looking for something to fill the time rather than filling a need that we have.

Although I feel our discussions have been great, I am not sure where we should go from here. Now that we know where the gaps are, I'm not sure we have really come to any solid conclusion about how to fill the gaps or even if they all need to be addressed. I agree with Mark ~ what does a cohesive K-6 curriculum look like?
\n
\nI also think the lessons\/activities taught each year is more of a living document as we find other ways to teach the same topics. I'm not sure if the "other side" of the building would benifit from knowing EXACTLY what "this side" is doing. I don't think there is a risk of us "over doing" an activity as the students progress through the grades so I guess I don't see an advantage for this type of an activity.
\n
\nThe book list idea ~ again a great idea but is it the best time spent? I'm not sure. It would be nice to have a science only list of books we have found and like but maybe a wiki or some other document we can just add to when we want would make more sense to build this resource.
\n
\nI'm not sure I really helped answer the question that faces our group ~ where do we go from here??","dateCreated":"1231450064","smartDate":"Jan 8, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"Edelberger","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/Edelberger","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}},{"id":"8217662","body":"I agree with the majority of what's been said, but at the same time I don't want to scrap the hard work we've put into it already. Last time we met, we discussed aligning resources (books, united streaming clips, etc.) and I still like this idea. We also discussed making a common vocabulary list. This may be more helpful than gathering books, etc. I think that the vocabulary is what trips kids up sometimes on the tests. ie. In first grade, we do a lot with 'sorting' rather than 'classifying'. Maybe this would be time well spent...?","dateCreated":"1231521433","smartDate":"Jan 9, 2009","userCreated":{"username":"egriffith","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/egriffith","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"}}],"more":0}]},{"id":"6831979","dateCreated":"1226267288","smartDate":"Nov 9, 2008","userCreated":{"username":"egriffith","url":"https:\/\/www.wikispaces.com\/user\/view\/egriffith","imageUrl":"https:\/\/ssl.wikicdn.com\/i\/user_none_lg.jpg"},"monitored":false,"locked":false,"links":{"self":"https:\/\/sherwoodelementary.wikispaces.com\/share\/view\/6831979"},"dateDigested":1532287129,"startDate":null,"sharedType":"discussion","title":"What to bring...","description":"Hi Everyone! \nFor tomorrow's CAT meeting, you need to bring the following items:
\n
\n1. Science Content Standards
\n2. Laptop

\nThe focus of tomorrow's meeting will be to perform a gap analysis of the Earth and Space standard from K-6 grade. Be prepared to have dicussions about what you have historically covered (activities) at your grade level in regards to the Earth Space standard.

If we use what Wendy has we can always visit later those cards if that helps. I think having the grade levels look at the different materials and the ohiorc website will be helpful to look at how to write questions for their tests so they look like the OAT. My hope and focus is really that we make sure that after looking at specific areas taught for each grade compared to the test and those grade levels make sure that they teach those portions of the test. We aren't being pulled away from our students for doo-dah reasons(that's for you Shawn:D). I am actually excited to meet again to map out what is expected of each grade level.
