I would like to see this next step:

Take the alignments of indicators. Copy for all.

Take the data from test extended response questions all grade levels.

Match expectations from test answers to indicators that teach that.

Find gaps.

Plan how to fill the gaps.

Also:

Reading:

For upper grade levels at least:

Look at initial data from Pro Ohio.

Students take 2 tests.

Look at that data.

PLAN intervention for kids low by printing off tests from the two grade levels below and walking through them with the kids who struggled, explaining every step of the way. Other kids are reading tumble books online while intervention takes place.

Re-take tests. Look at results. Note them, but move on to two more tests.

Social Studies:

I would like to look specifically at the 5th grade and 8th grade tests like we did before. From there, STAR on our indicators which ones to spend the most time (or the only time on) during our year.

Connie West outlined suggested days or lessons devoted to indicators, but I’m not sure that is what truly shows up on the 8th grade test.

For example: They don’t emphasize the social skills & methods on the suggested days. However, 80% of kids missed the multiple choice and extended response that tests their knowledge of how to work in groups (deciding who will be the timekeeper, task master, scribe, reporter, etc.) Consequently, we spend more time on Neanderthals when we should be teaching them the life skill of working together cooperatively. We just assume they know this by now. We also assume by telling them to “share responsibility and work nicely” that that covers it.

Hope this helps! I need your honest input on your understanding of what our goal is for the upcoming CAT meeting (14th)and your thoughts/opinions/ideas on what our goal is for the future of this group.

I'd like for the CAT teams to have a clear purpose and meaning moving forward and the time we spend togehter to be of the highest quality. If your leaving your classrooms, it should be time well spent. If there are topics that you feel can increase the quality of SS instruction at Sherwood and this CAT is the right forum for engaging in these topics, then let's continue down this path.

On the flip side, I don't want to invent things to discuss to just simply meet. A good teacher can recognize when it's time to change directions. Are we at that place?

Should we incorporate Marzano's strategies as a part of our time in CAT's, are their areas that you feel you'd like to deepen your content knowledge? As I plan for the 14th your thoughts will be essential in shaping the direction of this group.

You guys rock!
I agree that the social studies CATeam has its own unique set of problems as our curriculum does not necessarily consist of a building block type foundation in which grade levels build upon one another. In my opinion, with each grade level focusing on its own “theme” (i.e.: fifth- U.S. history, fourth – Ohio history…) with regard to the standards, the cross grade level communications are not nearly as effective as in other CATs. I know we had talked about coming up with a list of terms and/or individuals that might be important to the kids, but I feel that any attempt might be grasping at straws. We know the tests change every year, and with limited data, it would be difficult to come up with anything resembling a “standardized” list. I appreciate the work we did with the standards and feel that our review of these was important, but I’m not sure further work on them is necessary. I agree with Dan that the time away from the classroom must be valuable. We all know how precious it is. If incorporating Marzano into our CATs would not be repetitive, I’m all for that. If it will be something we will cover with the staff at future meetings, then I feel we should wait for this. I wonder if it might be time to postpone our Social Studies CATs until after the first of next year. That way we will have a new set of data and more information to help guide us on our search for further improvement.
I agree that if we are going to be taken out of the classroom then it should be for a good reason. Right now, I feel as though we are sometimes doing "busy work" instead of really focusing on how we can help our kids. When my team and I share our CAT Team news I feel as though I really don't have anything to contribute. I have asked them for feedback but they really don't have much to say either. I think that we could maybe use this time to incorporate Marzano into our discussions and work on creating UbD's. Then we could share them and get feedback from other grades - to see if we are missing any important terms, facts, etc. Just a thought.
I think Maribeth really covered my thoughts well (thanks!). I would love to do more work with Marzano in our CAT team, but like Maribeth said, I don't want to cover topics that will be addressed elsewhere. Are their other building concerns that our group could help with? Social studies just has such limited data for else to look at right now. Or like Lindsay saie, we could use the time to work on UbD's for our social studies units and we could share those with our teammates. Or perhaps we could look into talking more about technology related topics since that is a big push in the district. Just a thought.
I'm fine with most of what others have said. I still think it would be useful to come up with that list of social studies related vocabulary terms that we could use throughout the grades, so the students are familiar with certain terms as they get older. I would agree with what also has been said about using our time to planning units. Personally I also would like to watch others teach their social studies, if that doesn't make them too uncomfortable. I know I don't have a magic formula for it and I would like to watch good teachers actually doing their instruction in all areas. This would be helpful for me.
Well, I like it a whole lot better than NO child left behind. I like the cross grade level discussions and feel they are very beneficial. One thing we didn't talk about in our social studies meeting, that I feel is a must for all children, is the upcoming Presidential election. We need to be covering this, at some level, in all grade levels. And we need to do this before they show up to "vote" in our mock election. We raise future readers by reading to them and immersing them in text. In order to not raise apathetical U.S. citizens, we need to help them understand, at an early age, the importance, and privilege of voting. The article about the school district that focused on the scores of the lowest 10% of their population was interesting. I too agree that it is a shame to spend a great deal of time admiring a problem. However, I would have liked some more specifics of what they were doing that was working so well. I think our Learning Teams are a step in the right direction, but we need to really work on the next step.
After reviewing the data from today's meeting and hearing the thoughts from other members of the team, what focus should we have for the 2008-2009 year and beyond?
I really think that we should be looking at key terms in social studies. We have common language that we use in both math and language arts, but there seems to be a lack of terminology when it comes to history. Are there important people/events that are missed? For example, it's helpful for students of American history to know The Civil War took place in the 1800s and World War II in the 1940s. It's good for them to know that there are people alive now who fought in WWII, but not the Civil War. Knowing brief descriptions of the most recognizable names in history is helpful. Working on some common terms and introducing them in early grades when possible is a good idea.
